Department of Sociology

The sociology Department established in 1954 and then onwards eminent scholars, professors and lecturers such as Dr. Neera Desai, Dr. Sudha Gogate, and lecturers like Anila Barot, Jyoti Vora and Dr. Lata Murugkar have nurtured the department by their great contributions.

• The Department organizes field work for the student in collaboration with various NGO's, organizations and institutions like Salaam Balak Trust, at Umarkhadi, Charni Road, Yuva Child Line at Dadar, Urkarsha Job Development Centre for Blind Women at Reay Road, Baal Asha Trust, Mahalaxmi, Mumbai. By working with these organizations, it not only helps students to broaden their vision and approaches towards life but also provide for them the fertile ground to enter into various courses like M.S.W., Human Resource Management etc.
• The Department has established "Nature Club" where lectures, film shows and nature visits are organized.
• From past two years department is conducting one month paraprofessional course on Paraprofessionals course on education of visually impaired children. This course enable students to acquire understanding of different aspects, issues of visually impaired children. It provides training in specialize devises, tactics, graphics etc. trainees also visits and participates in the activities organized by government institutions and various NGO's working for the visually impaired. For the course we invite very reputed resource persons from the Education Department of "National Association for the Blind" India. Around 14 resource persons gives guidance to the students every year. Till now 23 students have benefited from the course. Few students also pursued for further two year teacher training course at NAB. The course is open also for outsider female participants, specially who are interested and need to learn Braille and other aspects of visually impaired children.
